Leading mathematicians are pushing back against AI companies deciding who gets early access to AI-generated mathematical proofs.
On October 25, the Advisory Group on Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence (AGMAI) published recommendations about how AI companies should share their mathematical discoveries. The group includes Fields Medalists Timothy Gowers and Martin Hairer, along with several other prominent mathematicians.
The concern is that AI companies have been giving selected mathematicians early access to results before making them available to everyone else. This gives those researchers an advantage and raises questions about who gets to decide which mathematicians have access to potentially important new mathematics.
The group recommends that AI-generated results be made publicly available, that companies explain how those results were produced, and that funding for mathematical research be managed independently rather than controlled by the companies themselves.
This follows another development on October 24, when four researchers announced oai-math-revised, a community project aimed at improving the hundreds of mathematical manuscripts OpenAI released earlier this month.
The project, announced on Terence Tao’s blog, allows mathematicians to correct errors, improve explanations, add missing references, and contribute to the verification of the AI-generated proofs.
These developments come after weeks of controversy surrounding OpenAI’s release of hundreds of mathematical manuscripts. Some results have been independently verified, while others have contained errors or required substantial additional work from mathematicians.
