Margaret Hamilton

Margaret Hamilton died on September 30 at the age of 90, according to an October 7 announcement from MIT.

Hamilton had a degree in mathematics and led the team that developed the onboard software for NASA’s Apollo missions. During the Apollo 11 moon landing, the computer started throwing overload warnings, but the software was designed to prioritize critical tasks and allowed the landing to continue.

Hamilton also helped establish software engineering as a discipline, at a time when writing software wasn’t always considered serious engineering work.
