September 24: Girolamo Cardano, born 1501. Ars Magna helped bring methods for solving cubic and quartic equations into print and made Cardano one of the central figures of Renaissance algebra.
September 24: Raoul Bott, born 1923. A giant of topology and geometry, best known for Bott periodicity.
September 25: Bryan John Birch, born 1931. Co-namesake of the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture, one of the remaining Millennium Prize Problems.
September 25: Alexander Ostrowski, born 1893. He worked across algebra, number theory, analysis, and numerical mathematics, with a remarkable number of results still carrying his name.
September 26: Percy Alexander MacMahon, born 1854. A foundational figure in enumerative combinatorics and the theory of integer partitions.
September 27: Mykhailo Krawtchouk, born 1892. Known for Krawtchouk polynomials, now important in areas including probability and coding theory, he was later persecuted and died in a Soviet labor camp.
