Navier Stokes, OpenAI, and a Messy Math Controversy

Navier Stokes: OpenAI announced a proposed proof that solutions to the 3D Navier Stokes equations can blow up in finite time. If the proof holds up, it would resolve one of the seven Millennium Problems.

But there is some controversy.

NYU mathematician Tristan Buckmaster and Levent Alpöge, who works at Anthropic, had already been working for about a year on the same problem and also using the forced blowup idea. Buckmaster has questioned the timing of OpenAI’s work. He says OpenAI only began pushing hard on Navier Stokes after learning that he and Alpöge were close to a breakthrough using the same forced blowup idea. He says OpenAI then proposed that he alone write a paper presenting what OpenAI said was its Navier Stokes solution. He also says OpenAI researcher Sébastien Bubeck twice wanted Alpöge removed from the paper because he works at Anthropic. Buckmaster rejected the proposal.
